Encrypt Mac Folder
1. Open Disk Utility option. To find Disk Utility option:
- Go to “Finder” icon > “Go” menu > Select “Utilities” from drop-down menu > Look for “Disk Utility” Icon (or follow: Command Key + Shift Key + U).
- Alternatively, search Spotlight for “Disk Utility” to find this tool.
2. Open Disk Image from the menu. Under Disk Utility menu: Go to “File” > New > Disk Image from folder.
3. Place the folder you want to encrypt, and press Image button.

The image file (.dmg) can be accessed by double clicking it to mount it in Finder menu. It will ask for password, type in your password and uncheck remember password in my keychain option.
After your .dmg file is mounted, you can access the contents of the folder. You can also add files and folder in the image file on which encryption will automatically apply.
After you’re finished working in your image file. Right-click on it and select “Eject.”

There are also third party encryption tools are available for Mac. Free and paid alike, but this method is sufficient and recommended. You can also encrypt your startup disk and place more security on your Mac to prevent further unauthorized access.
